The America the Beautiful 5 oz silver coin is 5 troy ounces of pure silver. The front of the coin is almost identical to John Flanagan’s design of the familiar Washington quarter except much larger (3” in diameter). It features the usual United States of America, Liberty, In God We Trust, and Quarter Dollar. The denomination is symbolic as these large coins contain 5 troy ounces of silver and fluctuate directly with the price of silver.
According to A Guide Book of United States Coins by R.S. Yeoman the reverse of these large silver coins will feature “five different sites of natural or historic significance” will be honored each year from 2010 through 2021 which totals 56 different coins. Mintages on the America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver Coin have varied from a low of 20,000 on Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park to a high of 126,700 on Montana’s Glacier National Park.
