Certified Rare Coins

THREE REASONS WHY INVESTING IN PCGS, NGC AND CAC CERTIFIED COINS MAKE SENSE

First, certified rare coins store real wealth and are historically interesting

Second, certified rare coins are private, easy to buy and sell, protect against 3rd party intrusion.

Third, certified rare coins are popular, easily stored and many are undervalued.

THE BEST RARE COINS & THE RARITY VERSUS DEMAND SECRECT

Which certified rare coins should you consider for long-term investment? Choosing rare coins which interest you is usually a great start. Early type, colonial coins, patterns, territorial gold, or better date silver dollars can lead to treasure and personal satisfaction. And remind yourself that while rarity is a good start, linking rarity with demand is a better approach. This important “link” pushes the price dynamic.

WHICH GRADE IS BEST? AND WHAT ABOUT EYE APPEAL?

It is important that your certified coins are graded by PCGS (The Professional Coin Grading Service),  NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation), or CAC (Certified Acceptance Corporation). This enhances liquidity and evaluation. Rare coins are graded using the Sheldon Scale from 1 to 70. The higher the number the better the condition. As rarity increases so does price. Look for a balance between rarity and affordability. At the same time “eye appeal” or what makes the coin “attractive” is important. Some coins barely make the grade while others are so nice they were almost given a higher grade. Understanding how to put this dynamic to work will make your investment job more successful. Keep in mind that California Numismatic Investments (Golddealer.com) is an authorized PCGS, NGC, and CAC dealer, here to help answer your questions.

INTERESTING STORIES ARE IMPORTANT

Certified rare coins with interesting stories make better choices because their history brings these treasures to life. The more compelling the story the better the opportunity to build valuable holdings and the more satisfying the ownership. Follow the old adage which says, “buy the book before the coin”, and consider the following classics. Yeoman’s Guide Book to United States Coins. It presents a concise introduction, explains grading, offers pricing and includes the history which makes US rare coin collecting and investing fascinating. A second series of books which are no longer in print but can be found on eBay are called The Numismatist’s Companion – (Q. David Bowers). These small books present a wonderful look at the eccentric people, hidden treasure and turbulent times which created the rare coin business. And don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy reading Lost and Found Coin Hoards and Treasures (1st & 2nd edition) out of print but still available on Amazon.

CONSIDER PRICING TRENDS

Collectors and investors develop a strategy which takes advantage of “up” and “down” trends in rare coin investing. Some rare coins can be purchased for less than their old highs which suggests a value buy. Others are trading at all-time highs, because their rarity attracts attention. Identifying both sides of the “buying or selling” trend will lead to an informed choice. If a rare coin is not at least fifty years old, it may not have a reliable price record. This is called the “50-year rule”. And remember to take your time, a long term approach creates better results.
